John Trumbull is the artist who painted the portrait in 1805. He was a relatively well-known painter and also did portraits of other members of the gentry and several iconic paints of the day, including the Declaration of Independence and many others. He was a former soldier in the Continental Army under Washington himself and even spent part of his post-military career in Europe as he worked on his painting and other skills.
