Hi all, I was interested in learning more about early Britain (Pictland, the Heptarchy, Kings Drest and so on) but I don't know exactly where to start. I'm wary of more modern documentary's and it doesn't seem like a hot topic. Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed! Thank you
Early Britain? It appears you want to learn about post-Roman through early medieval Britain ;).
Regardless, I used The Archaeology of Britain: An Introduction from Earliest Times to the 21st Century when I took a graduate seminar on the archaeology of the isles. It's dry, but good.
You may wish to get a copy of Bede, but I would also suggest you get a good commentary that addresses what he's doing.
Oxford Classics has a nice compendium of Anglo-Saxon literature you may wish to check out as well.
The In Our Time radio program has all of its episodes on itunes and there are numerous Anglo-Saxon topics.
Campbell and John's The Anglo-Saxons is old and probably has some outdated information, but there are many pretty pictures and I found it worthwhile when I bought it as an optional text when I took a Bede in Latin course.
