For many years the number I've seen reported has been around 2,500. More recently though I'm starting to see those who claim that 4,400 were killed.
This seems to be quite a large discrepancy to me. I would have thought that Western Allied record keeping would have been a bit better than that.
But on top of that, why are they now starting to find out that perhaps 4,400 were killed instead of 2,500?
The official KIA count is 4,414 dead. The 2,500 number the number of American KIA with 1,915 being from Allied nations (British, Canadian, Polish, ect...) These numbers are National D-Day Memorial currently publishes. Although the number has fluctuated somewhat over the years as names especially from non-combat deaths during the invasion have been added it's pretty much always been held that the 4,400 Allied and 2,500 American numbers are accurate.
