There is no timeline of archaeological periods that works in every area. Each region and academic specialty has its own terms and definitions that are useful to it. Mesoamericanists tend to use Archaic / Formative / Classic because the European model of Stone / Bronze / and Iron ages don't make any sense in the Americas.
