I was reading a forum post about the witch hunts in Europe. They suggested up to a million people were killed for being witches. Admittedly the post was written with feminist undertones, but I'm wondering what the generally accepted numbers are?
Current scholarly consensus is that ~100,000 people were prosecuted for witchcraft in Europe and the colonial Americas in the 15th-17th centuries. ~50,000 of these accusations resulted in the person being executed. Overall, about 85% of alleged witches were women, although the full story isn't quite that straightforward. In some areas, more men than women were prosecuted, and over the course of the era of witch trials, an increasing proportion of accused witches were men.
It's impossible to delineate a single pattern of behavior that would get someone accused of witchcraft, or even a specific social standing. (In situations of mass witch hysteria, an accused witch under torture might be forced to name basically every name they could think of before the torturers relented. Behavior was irrelevant in cases like these). There are certainly trends, especially in particular geographic areas, but no hard and fast rules.
