Hello. I've always wondered of the transportation of the Statue of Liberty. I don't mean the top Google photos.
This sub continuously delivers with pictures of a distant time none of us have ever seen, much less been able to understand other than a few snapshots of that time. Just hoping to get a better understanding from those who have delved deeper than the common Google search.
Liberty Enlightening the World was created and assembled in Paris, before being disassembled, shipped to the U.S. and permanently assembled in New York.
So any picture of the statue being transported would probably look like a French freight ship, with the statue tucked in pieces in the hold.
The Berkeley art historian Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby has a book called Colossal: Engineering the Suez Canal, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, and Panama Canal, which contains a number of images of the Statue in production and perhaps in transit. If you have access to an academic library you might look there for more information. One of her main sources for pictures of the Statue is the Musee Bartholdi (warning: site is in French and pretty basic), a museum devoted to the statue's designer. If your French is better than mine you might make some headway with them, as well. But check out Grigsby's book - it's quite good.
