I've been reading about some of the capabilities that a modern drone has and it got me thinking about how accurate air bombings used to be. What I'm asking is whether any air force had planned a mission to take out a single person and what kind of measures would have been taken to carry that out.
One famous example is Operation Vengeance in April 1943, where the US got together a squad of fighters along with decrypted intelligence and used it to assassinate Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who the US blamed the attack on Pearl Harbor, while he was an airplane on an inspection tour. It was meticulously planned out, though this was not reported on at the time because of fear of giving away their source of information (that they could decrypt Japanese communications). It is unusual in part because it was not run by special service agencies or anything like that. They sent a bunch of fighters on a route that wouldn't be detected, shot his plane out of the air, then later went to recover the body.
