There is no better book for your purposes than Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War. The amount of detail that the book goes into is mind-boggling. If you want to know how many spokes the ship's wheel had on a Kuma-class cruiser, this seven-pound book will tell you. If you need to know the number of links in the bow anchor chain of the Furutaka, you need this book. If you're curious where the rice was stored on the Myoko, this book will tell you. Yes, seriously.

The bad news is that it's been out of print for some time, and is currently selling for around $170. I got my copy for about half that, though... just keep an eye out.

There are also dozens of "Super Drawings in 3D" series, many of which deal with Japanese ships. They don't really explain what you're looking at in the gorgeous pictures very well, however.
