Was the slavery of Irish and other whites in America's early years comparable to slavery of blacks in numbers or scale? Were there more white slaves then black?

I have heard the argument that "whites were slaves too" for various reasons, not important to the question. But is it true? The only sources I can find are from blogs that appear to be racially biased one way or the other.

Hello. Much of the 'white slavery' arguments are derived from either White Cargo, a book by two non-historians that had good intentions but fell into bad history, or from They Were White and They Were Slaves, written by holocaust denier, conspiracy theorist, and Neo-Nazi sympathizer, Michael A. Hoffman II.
