So I'm reading a book on the 1972 US Presidential election and it led me to reading about Watergate and the "dirty tricks" that were uncovered upon investigation. Wikipedia taught me about the Canuck Letter and has some vague mentions of slush funds and money laundering, but that's about it.

I am sure others who have more expertise in this area can weigh in to offer you examples, but allow me to encourage you to seek out the film All the President's Men, which is about the reporters Woodward and Bernstein of the Washington Post, who uncovered the story of the Watergate coverup. It is based on the events as they happened, and provides a wonderful overview. It is my all-time favourite movie, in large part because of the successful merging of history and fiction. Perhaps something to watch after all the more legitimate historical research is finished.
