Edison/Tesla's duel and them being in an AC/DC debate is an internet urban myth.
Tesla worked at an Edison subsidiary, the Edison Machine Works, for a grand total of 6 months.... and left because he thought it was a dead end job. He really didn't associate with Thomas Edison.... it was a big corporation at that time.
Edison started his DC system in 1882 and got in a duel with George Westinghouse starting in 1886 (who was using an AC system designed by William Stanley Jr, not Tesla). They were really fighting by spring of 1888. Edison's company went AC in 1892 when he was bought out by the biggest AC company around---> the Thomson-Houston Electric Company----> forming GE.
Tesla got in the AC business when he came out with an AC motor patent in 1888 but it didn't get off the ground until 1893, so Tesla and Edison never really crossed paths, AC/DC wise.... one was coming into the business when the other one was leaving.
Tesla did not get his first patent until after he left Edison..... so there was nothing for Edison to steal.
How do such myths get started? Who knows..... its the internet......
