In particular, the Cordell and McBrinn book is a good place to start. I would strongly suggest against any Lekson for the time being. He has... particular views about Southwest archaeology and you need a basis before you get into that. This book by Stephen Plog is also quite good, on par with the Cordell and McBrinn book.

Either one would be a good introductory text. They both take a chronological approach, starting with the peopling of the New World and up until Spanish contact. Both are focused on Ancestral Puebloan people (that is, the people primarily inhabiting the Four Corners region) rather than other archaeological cultures in the area, such as the Hohokam of southern Arizona. Unfortunately, there aren't many good syntheses of these other culture areas. If you are interested in the Hohokam, however, The Hohokam Millenium by Suzanne and Paul Fish is a pretty good overview. More coffee-table than the other two, but still written by academic archaeologists.
