I've been doing some research here in Australia reading archived local newspapers dated from 1850s - 1900, a few including local histories and obituaries. They definitely said the "20s", "30s", "40s", "70s". I would be surprised if this was unique to Australia. Source: http://trove.nla.gov.au/
