Was just wondering if there is data measuring which Southern state many African Americans left and which Northern cities they trended to.
Living in New Jersey, talking to local librarians, I've become very interested in the subject. For example, in Montclair, I was told that most Blacks came from Virginia. But in Trenton, it was predominately Georgia.
I was hoping to find this particular data or wondered if anyone has mapped it.

The data exist; the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses list race/ethnicity, as well as the individual's place of birth and the place of birth of the parents. Information on census records 1950 and subsequent censuses is not, of course, available, since there is a 72 year embargo on the release of individual records. 1950 and 1960 censuses asked for the individual's place of birth only; subsequent years asked place of birth for only a sample of respondents.
As to whether or not this data has been complied and summarized, I do not know.
