The so-called "Drawings from the GULAG” by Danzig Baldaev are not drawings from the Gulag. They are drawings about the Gulag. They are based on folklore and fiction about the Gulag. The drawings were made in the late 1980-s as an artwork inspired by Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago. Baldaev's depiction of the Gulag is grotesque up to the point of sadistic pornography.

Baldaev had no real connection to Gulag. He was born in 1925, in 1951 - 1957 he worked as a prison guard (one shouldn't confuse prisons with the Gulag camps) and then served as a police officer. He is notable for his criminal tattoos research.
