From the time of George Washington to the signing of the 22nd amendment, it was an unwritten rule for a US president to not serve for more than two terms. The man to break that rule was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. My question is: was there much, if any, resistance to FDR taking on another term, or was everyone pretty much okay with it? And also was FDR the reason the 22nd Amendment was put into place?
Also, was there an understanding that he would step aside once the war was over?
I'm wondering if the 3 or 4 terms might be analogous to the emergency powers that Lincoln had.
