I imagine this is what you're talking about. If that's the case, it's merely a shield with the colors of the Reich battle flag. These were painted on helmets by factories before the war, but after 1939 the High Command ordered their removal for camouflage purposes, but many soldiers kept them on. Expect to see more of them in photos of German soldiers earlier in the war.
