Was Georges Picquart really as instrumental in securing the release of Alfred Dreyfus as some accounts claim? or would the case eventually have been picked apart anyway?

I've just read an officer and a Spy, and I was really astonished at just how ridiculous certain aspects of the case were. Such as how Esterházy was actually already widely suspected of leaking documents to the Germans.

Surely sooner or later things would have unraveled? Even without Georges Picquart intervening?
