I am watching 'The Siege of Jadotville' and in the beginning, an Irish general says that Ireland is neutral and had never invaded another sovereign nation. Does the Easter Rising of 1916 considered not threatening the sovereignty of part of the U.K?
Ireland was not a sovereign nation during the rising. The IRA started a war in order to stop Ireland being part of the UK; the country did not invade itself. Neither the Irish Free State nor the present Republic of Ireland has invaded another country, though the armed forces of the Republic have participated in U.N. Peacekeeping missions. The Irish Free State remained neutral throughout WWII, for example. The Republic of Ireland does claim dominon over the entire isle of Ireland in its constitution, but agreed in the Good Friday Agreement that it would not act to bring about reunification of the isle unless and until a majority of citizens in both the Republic and Northern Ireland expressed the desire for this to occur. Natural born citizens of Northern Ireland are also entitled to citizenship in the Republic.
