You're going to have a hard time getting an answer to this question because you don't specify a region and time period (thus it reads as a "throughout the entire world throughout all time", a question type frowned on by the rules because they attract bad answers and are very difficult or impossible to fully answer well) and you're asking for support for your not-really-explained (I certainly don't understand what you mean) pre-existing belief that may not really hold true, both traits which (with good reason!) often deter potential answers.

If you take a little time to resubmit a clarified version of your question you are much more likely to get a response. Try picking a particular time period and region during which you sense this type of change may have occurred, and explain what the heck you mean by "the primacy of the nation-state gave way to economic strength," because the flairs in the sub are not mind-readers.
