I know the Iron Maiden was fake (invented later than actually stated), but I don't know how much of it's premise was fake. Could it actually impale someone without damaging any major organs and killing the victim. Was this premise accurately created. I don't know if this is the place to ask this but I can't think of anywhere else to ask it.

Bonus question: What was the motivation for creating the premise?
