Not an answer to the main question, but you probably mean the Anglo-Saxons, not the Normans. The Anglo-Saxons brought Germanic to Britain when most people spoke Celtic.

The Normans came centuries later, and spoke an old French language/dialect, which was the basis for a lot of loanwords into English, but it didn't catch on beyond the elite.
