There were three major slave revolts. The First Servile War occurred in Sicily in 135-132 BC, and the Second Servile War took place in 104-100 BC and also on Sicily. The Third Servile war is the most famous, being led by the gladiator Spartacus, in 73-71 BC. These revolts were quite serious, Crassus crucified 6000 captured slaves along the Appian road at the end of the Sparactan revolt as a lesson to those slaves who might think of such revolts. Over time the Romans also made laws that helped protect slaves from particularly cruel and abusive masters, to prevent uprisings and maintain the slave populations.
