He commanded a battalion-sized element in a theater of the conflict that the popular narrative already tends to minimize, and he died before having any real political impact. His most substantial political contribution was probably being friends with Alexander Hamilton, and possibly influencing his position on slavery. He was a fairly ardent abolitionist within a revolutionary movement that had a large slaveholding bloc, and again, he died right as the war ended.
