Topics I'm talking about can be anything related to the following:
Ancient Jewish History
The Diaspora
History of The State of Israel (48 war, pre-Israel politics, British Mandate, Modern Israeli politics, etc.)
Examinations of foreign policy history. Historical conflicts and modern regional relationships.
The history of the IDF (their development and their relationship with military forces in other countries)
An examination of political groups and leaders within Israel. Former prime ministers, former P.A. leaders, etc.
It's fine if the book contains both sides of a bias (say an examination of both Pro and anti-zionism ideas) but please nothing which is overly one-sided in either direction.

As far as I'm aware the two most definitive for the United States are:
The Columbia History of Jews and Judaism in America
and Howard Sachar's A History of the Jews in America.
I'm most familiar with the mandate period, for which I quite like
Tom Segev's One Palestine, Complete: Jews and Arabs under the British Mandate
and Naomi Sheperd's Ploughing Sand: British Rule in Palestine 1917-1948
