I'm guessing ancient people would have come across large dinosaur bones. What would they have made of them? Did it inform their myths & legends? Was there anything written that we could point to as definitely having been a reference to dinosaur bones?
Here's a link to a reply I wrote to a similar question that has quotations from ancient sources discussing fossils. The short answer is the ancients did find them, though in the Mediterranean the tendency seems to have been to take them as the bones of heroes or giants rather than those of dragons or monsters.
