In Rage, by Steven King, he wrote that the Cherokee Tribe would mark adulterous women by slitting their nose. Is this true? If so, what other markings would they use, and why?

Also, would these markings be used by other clans, or would each clan have its own markings? Did one clan know what another clans markings meant?
