For my course, I need to write an essay on any field that I wish, but the main requirement is that I look at two sides of a controversial subject. I picked Nazi Germany, and its related topics, as my subject.
I would love to look at if the atrocities committed against the Polish people was a genocide, but I am not sure if this is a controversial subject among academics.
I understand that there is the debate between functionalism and intentionalism.
Is there any major debate on the war goals of Nazi Germany?
In general, I would love to know any major debates involved in these subjects.
I suggest you take a look at Halik Kochanski's book The Eagle Unbowed: Poland and the Poles in the Second World War. In the introduction especially, but also at points throughout the book, Kochanski explicitly discusses some of the historiographical controversies related to Poland, Polish Christians and Jews, the Holocaust, and Nazis-and-Soviets during World War 2. The book will give you some ideas for topics, and the footnotes will give you some sources with which to start your research!
Slightly dated, but The Holocaust 2nd ed. by Donald Niewyk is part of the Problems in European Civilization series. It has a few basic Holocaust related issues and roughly three articles on each. Each of the articles espouses a different perspective on questions such as the origins of the Holocaust (intentionalism vs. functionalism), Jewish resistance, and possible rescue opportunities.
It could serve as an intro to a number of topics if the work suggested by /u/sunagainstgold is not sufficient.
