Accounts of the American Indian Wars often make graphic reference to extreme tortures inflicted by American Indians on their captives. Are these accounts accurate? Was this torture reciprocated against captives of American forces?

If it was real, how did this torture affect Native and American views of each other?

I'm having trouble researching it myself because most results seem to be either white supremacist/apologia for colonialism - "look how savage they were" - or Native American activists completely denying it ever happened.
