I have been contemplating this question for awhile now and I could see the plausibility of both answers but I wonder which set of ideals are more common in the community?
Every survey that I have ever come across indicates the professoriate in the humanities and social sciences is overwhelmingly of the left: http://www.criticalreview.com/2004/pdfs/cardiff_klein.pdf
History departments being about average for the humanities and social sciences a whole, with economics and poli-sci attracting more from the right and anthropology and sociology being more on the left.
Edit: To be specific, this is only for the United States. I am not familiar with comparable studies internationally.
