Also, this question uses AskHistorians as a flimsy pretext to ask a tendentious question clearly aimed at confirming my prior political or ideological commitments?

Just wanted to add for anybody curious, this is not in fact the only sub of its general kind! A very good one I frequent is r/askscience, which flairs users with confirmed credentials and provides high quality responses. The modding is still strict though not quite as much as this sub.
This comment obviously violates the usual rules for this sub, but this seems like an appropriate forum. I just want to thank the mods of this sub for curating such an amazing platform. You guys are awesome and I truly appreciate all the hard work you do to hold the level of dialog here to a high standard.
