What if the Catholics hadn't been passed over

I recently read this Q&A here and wondered, if the Catholics hadn't been passed over to find the next heir, who would have been the next rightful heir after Queen Anne of Stuart?

The next in the Stuart line would have been the son of the deposed James II, who was Prince James Francis Edward, born in 1688. He became known as the Old Pretender. He claimed to be James III of England and Ireland and James VIII of Scotland. His son, Charles Edward b. 1720 was known as Bonnie Prince Charlie and also claimed the thrones.
