Various kinds of axes were very common weapons across the entirety of the middle ages, from one-handed axes to two-handed poleaxes used in late medieval combat. There's no real way to be more exact about such a broad question. We do not have statistical breakdowns of how many soldiers would have carried specific weapons, because of the vagaries of medieval sources. We do on occasion have armory inventories, orders for purchases of weapons, receipts, and wills/inventories of soldier's goods, but these do not apply for the entirety of the period nor do they provide an entirely complete picture of what every soldier in an army might have owned or used.
