What did ancient music sound like?

by Herrenvolken

For instance, we know that Egyptians had music..however..were we ever able to discover what their music sounded like? Was there ever a recreated piece? Were there any music sheets back then?

I know you asked for ancient music, but maybe of interest: here is an old discussion about medieval music by u/hhawks12 in r/AskHistorians.

Music notation has been more of an anomaly than the norm. As far as I can tell, we don't know of and don't have any form of musical notation from before the Greek period of Egypt (they brought theirs with them, and it's not like we have everything figured out about ancient Greek music). I think there are claims of some Egyptian system of notation from around the 5th to 7th centuries CE, but that doesn't really helps with your question.

We have depictions of instruments, performances, fragments of instruments... But that doesn't tell us what music sounded like. You will find videos in Youtube claiming to reconstruct ancient music, take those with a massive amount of salt.
