More than two genders in Ancient Societies/Civs

by ariariariarizona

I'm writing a research paper on the History of Gender and Gender identity. I have found some great sources for "Two-Spirits" in Native American culture but aside from that I'm having trouble locating primary sources from any other society or civilization in which there were more than two genders. Can anyone help point me in a good direction for research? I appreciate any help from here but maybe this question would be better suited for /r/AskSocialScience? Let me know and thank you!

I am not an expert in this field (my doctoral focus is Chinese political history), but I can suggest a book I read and critiqued in a graduate course on gender and sexuality. The professor, who does work in a related field, thought highly of it:

Najmabadi, Women with Mustaches and Men Without Beards: Gender and Sexual Anxieties of Iranian Modernity, University of California Press, 2005.

Hi, hopefully you get some help here but please consider x-posting to /r/AskSocialScience and /r/AskAnthropology, as they may have more resources on this.
