Will WWI and WWII be considered more or less the same war into the future?

I've heard the idea that WWI and II should be considered the same war separated by a brief hiatus as one pretty much directly influenced the other. Is there any merit to this line of thinking?

Unlikely. Of course we can't predict what future historians will say, but there's no good reason to believe they will. As while some of the causes of WW2 can be linked back to WW1, the idea that it's merely a continuation of WW1 is not really supported by the evidence.

While certainly some of the powers involved in the wars on the respective sides look similar, there's a lot of powers that were on one side in WW1 and the other in WW2.

Furthermore, the reasons for war where vastly different on both sides, and as much as Germany preferred to cast themselves as just responding to grievances introduced in WW1, for the most part this is mere propaganda.

We've had wars that were more closely linked than WW1 and WW2 that we still consider to be separate wars.
