Can history make an argument as to whether right wing authoritarianism, or left wing libertarianism is the more successful political trend?

Specifically, I'm wondering if there exist instances for either side where the government unambiguously enjoys consistently high popular (domestic) and international approval, including from at least a significant part of the opposition.

I'd like to point out that I don't consider however many people either side managed to sway throughout time, or however many governments they came to rule throughout history relevant as a measure of success.

Edit: In other words, what I definitely DON'T mean by success is the ability of rhetoric from either leaning to convince voters. I mean the successful performance of a government in real, quality of life terms.

The question is, what's a 'successful political trend'? You have to define the terms of success in order to define the answerability of your question.
