Now that it is officially getting cold outside, and my lips are chapped, what is the first known time in human history that helped keep chapped lips at bay?
I'm not sure this falls under "history", but more likely pre-history, which is a question for anthropologists.
"Chapstick" is a brand name. And of course, placing emollients in small plastic tubes so that they're easy to carry is a modern invention (and maybe someone will come along with some interesting information about that).
But knowing to apply some sort of grease to lips or skin to prevent moisture loss in dry weather doesn't really require "invention" in that sense, and I can't help but think our ancestors must have figured that out long before they developed writing.
It would be interesting to r/AskAnthropology what record we have of people gathering oils or fats in containers to use as a cosmetic.
