I have a more specific follow up question. What leftist parties (Communists, socialists, or others) existed in the lead up to 1933? What was their relationship to each other, and what did they do immediately before the election and immediately after?

I have heard much of the opposition to the National Socialists were mostly fairly conservative rather than specifically leftist.
