In the ancient Roman army, did generals, and cavalry officers/decuriones, have a different, more expensive kind of horse than the rest of the equites?

In the early Roman army the cavalry had to supply their own horse, therefore one would assume that the higher paid officers would be able to afford a nicer horse. I would assume it would be the same for the later armies as well.
