Did gas companies in the 1800's try to lobby against the advent of electric lighting?

I don't know about lobbying, but gas companies did fight hard with advertising. I no longer own the book, but I highly recommend "The Languages of Edison's Light" by Charles Bazerman. He details the marketing battles between gas and electric light. The gas lighting companies focused on the attractiveness of gas lighting compared to electric, both the quality of the light itself and the relative beauty of gas fixtures compared to electric fixtures.
