I've talked with a lot of Chileans about their experiences during the coup and a lot of the older generation share the opinion that it was good that Pinochet took power because Allende was responsible for the economic shortages. In their narrative, Allende ruined the economy and Pinochet stepped in, took over, and saved the day. In the narrative of the younger generation, Allende was a hero trying to rectify generations of inequality, but the United States sabotaged the Chilean economy and was responsable for the poor economic conditions before the coup. Which of these narratives is more correct?
Did Allende's policies actually aid in improving the welfare of the poor or did they lead to recession? To what extent did Pinochet save the Chilean economy when he took power? Did the United States have any role in creating the economic conditions in Chile in 1973?
A partial answer to your question can be found in a comment chain I made on another question concerning the US and their involvement in the 1973 coup. It mostly concerns the affects of the US economic blockade.
