Hi OP, I'll leave the question of Napoleon's army to others, ie what they were wearing, what the articles were made of, whether their clothing smelled, and whether anyone commented on that, but regarding your sweatsuit, it would be worth x-posting to /r/AskScience because I suspect that the type of fabric it's made from was the main cause.
