When artificial dyes were first invented, how available were they to consumers? Did only the rich have access, or were they cheap enough that everyone got access? How did this affect the existing dye markets and the international trade in traditional dye ingredients?
Did the introduction of a larger variety of colors for clothing cause a major shift in popular fashion?
I actually wrote about this once and dug it up for you! Actually rereading it I don't think my answer is very good, but I cited a book you should check out, the tl;dr is yes, artificial dyes brought vibrant colored clothes and other goods to the masses, and people quickly started moaning about poor people dressing "above their station."
