Who was Hitler being compared to when he was coming to/in power? Is there just this long line of "[Person people think is terrible] is the next [Past person people think is terrible]"?

Question: These days Columbus seem to have a really bad rep (SouthAmerican here: I do think of him as evil, but that's not the point now). Is this something recent? Or people in the 1800's were already having that image?
