From the same geographical region although not the same time period- 'The Bandala Method of Hunting Elephant on Foot' by JGS MacPhail, Sudan: Notes and Records Vol 13, No 2 (1930), pp 279-283

Essentially a group of 6 hunters, armed with spears will all rush a elephant. They'll try to hamstring it. The first one to stab at the elephant will usually then be chased by it, whereupon the others will swarm in and try to, again hamstring it or stab at the stomach. Once the elephant is hamstrung, it seems they just repeatedly move in and stab it until it dies of blood loss. It's presented as a very dangerous business that requires the hunters to be extremely agile at the close quarters work that's needed.
