Hey folks. I have a situation. My family received an ancestry report dating back all the qay to 1060. In that report, my ancestor is stated as the Duke of Charante. Apparently he was a vassal of the King of France, near the Swiss border, and was killed in battle against the King, along with his two eldest sons. Is there any more info you would have?
Based on the information you've provided, I'm afraid that your ancestry report sounds like junk. I hope nobody paid for it...
So yeah, firstly, there was never any such person as the Duke of Charante. In fact, there's no such place as Charante. I thought at first you meant, Charente, which is a river and a region, but that's in western France, north of Bordeaux and bordering the Atlantic Ocean - i.e. about as far as you can get from the Swiss border without getting wet. The fact that the nominal border of the French kingdom in 1060 was the river Saone/Rhone, and so significantly to the west of modern-day Switzerland is another hole in the story. There's also the fact that Charente wasn't a political or administrative unit until modern times - in the medieval period, the region would have been under the control of the dukes of Aquitaine and other local nobles such as the count of Angloueme. Neither of these were killed by the King of France, however - in fact, it was in 1060 that the King of France himself, Henry I, died and left a 6 year-old heir in his place.
Do you have any more information about what was reported? Unfortunately, none of what you've written here makes any sense in the context of 11th century France.
