Could any European historians - preferably specializing in WWII history - help me trace my Great Grandfather, Grandfather, and Great Uncle through Poland, The Ukraine, Italy, and England during WWII?

I am sorry if it sounds like a lot to ask, but my family are very involved with investigating our ancestors from Poland.

My grandfather told my mother he studied in medical school in Italy, and served in the Polish Underground Resistance. He told us of his father owning a road construction company, and not much else. We are not sure where in Poland he is from, but I am just trying to get a timeline from some of these documents we have found.

I have a discharge certificate with army no. 30040168 and the effective date of discharge being 3/10/47 but the records office stamp says 25 FEB 1948, Witley Camp, Godalming Surrey.

Another note we have is dated May 19, 1952 written by Wladyslaw Anders, certifying that he served under his command in the 2nd Polish Corps in Italy and was decorated with the Bronze Cross of Merit with Swords. It also notes that he received a military grant and studied Medicine in the Bologna University, Italy.

What I am confused about between those two documents is the first, that has a slash under medals, and the second letter from General Anders stating he received the bronze cross with swords. When I google my great grandfather's name, I can find (after some digging) a list of bronze cross recipients with his name on it as well. We do have my grandfather's certificate, reading, “Polskie Sily Zbrojne” with proper stamps and signatures, but the date, 26/5/(year) appears to be tampered with. The date appears to read 1947, but has an 8 written over the 7.

Lastly, a couple years ago, a historian found this document: http://forum.axishistory.com/download/file.php?id=287299&t=1&sid=0b2d12229a1ceb55253bf0dfed2f4d20 and we were stunned. If you look at the posts surrounding that image here, http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=189536&start=15 it is quite apparent that he is talking about my great grandfather. My family in England went to visit that historian and the Wehrwolf site, and didn’t have much to report back.

My grandfather told my mother stories about growing up in Poland, living on a farm, and the day the nazis came and he hid in a barn with his brother while they tied jewish poles up there and set it on fire. He was apparently well to do, but with all of the reading about Wehrwolf and the Strishawka village, I cannot understand why my great grandfather, my grandfather, or his brother did not meet the same fate as many of the other jewish residents and Polish who stayed there and were contracted to work. It does not seem certain whether or not my great grandfather, Wilhelm, was killed after he helped construct Wehrwolf - if he did.

Can anyone hypothesize this sequence of events, before 1943, and after 1952? My mother was born in 1961, my grandfather came to the United States to become a doctor a few years before. My cousin in England was born a year before my mother, I believe. My grandfather and his brother only saw each other once after they went separate ways across the Atlantic. My great uncle only came to the United States once from England, and they got in a huge fight and never spoke again. My grandfather only came to England for his funeral.

Any clarification based on this rough timeline, or direction towards resources that would help me with that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

P.S. - If anyone would like to see these papers we have, I would gladly scan them in.

Edit: My great grandfather survived the war. Died poor and was buried in a common grave somewhere in France.

Hi, hopefully someone can drop by with some direct help, but I thought it would be worth recommending a couple of general things to you first:

If you need any general help tracing genealogical info (dates and locations of births, christenings, marriages, censuses, property deeds, tax rolls, etc), do consider asking the gang in /r/genealogy for some tips.

Secondly, this sub has a few tips for requesting military records; we don't have any info for Poland or Italy yet (so if anyone would like to contribute to our wiki, please do let us know!), but possibly there is some record of his British service that you could get: Requesting military records | United Kingdom

I hope this helps, and best wishes for getting more responses from the WWII military experts.
