Not sure about World War two, but for World War 1 war was seen very differently, going to war was similar to send your kid off to college. Best case scenario you save the world worst case scenario you die for your country with a hero's death. Even in the recruitment process they would make fun of people who wouldn't serve World War 1 and men were seen as cowards.

You don't HAVE to go serve for your country, you GET to serve for your country.

Veterans of Wars prior to World War One never really experienced the true horror, because beforehand it was a very gentlemanly war. And when it wasn't Americas usually in the winning end.

But when he started World War 1 the smallest armies we're often about the same size or bigger than the Roman army at its peak, hundred of thousands of people died too fast, but that opinion held throughout the war. And you could probably see you at 10 how they treated Soldiers with PTSD shell shock or whatever you wanna call it,

World War 1 was a war that was brutal, no conflicts lasted nearly as long refering to staying in trenches. So none of the current generals understood battle fatigue and got to confuse for cowardness.

After World War 1 they started training with battle fatigue and PTSD in mind
