AFAIK, the Dutch settlers in South Africa fled up north due to Britain's conquest of the lands, then founding their own states. Did any sort of exodus of settlers occur earlier, in the Americas?
Yes, I think the Mormon exodus was kind of similar, except with religious groups as opposed to national groups, where the Mormons set off West to found their own state where they could practice their religion without oppression. Which is how they ended up in Utah.
